Colorizing Images to Communicate Galaxy Distances

Three different images reveal galaxies in the area of Galaxy UVISTADR1 J100121.94+021937.6, which is visible only in the z filter image. Credit: Subaru HSC Survey, courtesy of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ).

You can use color to communicate which galaxies are the most distant by colorizing the shortest wavelength filter blue, colorizing the middle wavelength filter green, and colorizing the longest wavelength filter red, then combining the images.

Interaction

  1. Create a color balanced image with the most distant galaxy colorized red. (Data from HSC-SSP and CLAUDS Surveys)
